Poured Out Like Water - And Flooded With Grace
By Andrea J Fox
“Poured Out Like Water is the story of my walk of faith towards allowing myself to be led by God. When faced with a mental health misdiagnosis, infertility and a failed adoption, my long-held belief that I am in complete control of my fate is shattered, yet I am replenished with faith in God, through the courage of a birthmother, the beauty of the Bible, and the love of a man named Bill.”
That’s my official “elevator pitch” but my memoir is about so much more. I describe a common characteristic among mothers – of perfectionism and operating under the illusion that we can control the outcome of every situation. Personally, I developed this quirky, sometimes helpful, mostly self-destructive behavior pattern from being a child of an alcoholic. In short, to offset the chaos of my house, I became a control freak, orchestrating all areas of my life in order to avoid surprise outcomes – and strategically avoiding situations for which the outcome was unknown.
However, when faced with depression, infertility, a failed adoption – and eventually becoming a mother to a child born 12 weeks early and only three pounds – I started to concede that I actually have little control over life’s randomness. In order to survive these situations, I had to abandon my adult-daughter behavior, becoming poured out like water, and learn to trust in God, thus becoming flooded with Grace.
In libraries and bookstores across the nation in May, 20(__?) I’ll keep you posted!
